Okay... Here is what I know.
You will first need to retrieve the broken flute for Gwenn...
She will tell you it's broken and talk about getting herself a new one...
Buy her the flute from the merchant and give it to her...
Now that she has a working flute, ask her to follow you.
When you get hurt in combat Gwen will play the flute and heal you for 20 or so HP...
Now, this is the part that I'm not sure about. You can also get her a cape. Also, you can give her the Red Iris Flowers that you find laying around every so often.
I THINK this improves the quality of the heal. Anyway, this is what I know about little Gwenn...

The OP is speaking of Gwen's Broken Flute that is found in Post-searing Old Ascalon, not Beginner Ascalon as you have assumed.
Demian, I also found this flute. It is near Sardelac Sanitarium, in one of the destroyed houses in the burned down village. I've been holding onto that for awhile and had no clue what to do with it, so I destroyed it. It doesn't show up as a Lore item, is worth zero gold, and cannot be traded off.
If anyone knows what this is for at the moment, please tell us, but if it is a huge spoiler, please don't! :-)

Surprisingly enough, I found an old tattered cape in Post-searing, near the Kryta area.
Perhaps Gwen lives?

I still keep an extra space in my inventory for her Tapestry shred. I've seen both of those things, the cape and flute. I deleted them both. :-) Just too much to carry! Perhaps she lives indeed.

I do hope to see her thou.. I wonders...
if u go to underworld... gwen's mom is there looking for gwen. i guess gwen is not in the underworld?

Yeh, there is a huge puzzle me thinks. If you check out the link posted, it seems that she can reappear out of pre searing.

I think the key is that the tapestry actually SAYS - "quest item", where the broke flute does not. I always keep quest items... they would be needed for a quest. Right?
This, along with the needed inventory space, as made me decide to keep the tapestry and delete the flute... until someone else posts something different.

I just stick any items of interest into storage, just in case.
*Shrugs* It's not like I use it extensively.

I think its an ongoing thing. Since there are peices of info refering to her all the way through out, the busted flute, the cape and gwen's mother. I think its like a hidden story element or something.

Something else for discussion, if she happens to be an uber-fighter if/when we find her post-sear, what will she be? She says at one point that she kind of wants to be a warrior like her father, but that mesmer outfits look better. What do you guys think? Mesmer/Warrior? :-)

She leaves the silly mesmer idea behind and becomes a full fledged fire elementalist.

Nobody has found her yet in the game.
But her dead mom is in the underworld. I wonder if someone has shown her any of her daugthers belongings?
